Firefighter burned while battling Mississauga house fire

A firefighter is in hospital and a family is out in the cold after a two-alarm blaze tore through a home in Mississauga on Monday night.

The fire started around 7:15 p.m., Monday in the kitchen of a home on Drysdale Drive near Highway 401 and Mavis Road.

“I turned around for two seconds and I saw the pan and I thought okay I’ve got to get it off the stove,” homeowner Satpal Jutla told CityNews.

“I couldn’t contain it so I just got my kids and my husband and got out of the house and called 911 as fast as possible.”

The Jutla family had lived in the home for over a decade and said they had working smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher but the fire spread too quickly.

“(Flames) just took off over the kitchen, in not even a minute. We had to just leave,” said Jutla.

A firefighter suffered non-life threatening injuries while attempting to put out the blaze.

“We have had one firefighter that has been transported to hospital,” Platoon chief Alan Hills told CityNews. “They were knocked back and the firefighter was burned on his shoulder and on his gloves. With the special gear that firefighters wear, that just shows intense the flames and heat was.”

Fire officials estimate as much as $150,000 in damage was done to the home.
