More than 27,000 runners laced up for the Sporting Life 10K on Sunday with the goal of sending children with cancer to summer camp.
Spokesman John Roe said the number of participants — which more than doubled in two years — and the race’s $2.4-million target are unprecendented.
“Last year we raised $2.2 million. The year before that was $1.2 million. The year before that was $850,000,” Roe said. “This year we are hoping to hit the $2.4-million mark.”
Camp Oochigeas Executive Director Alex Roberston said the camp experience can make things more bearable for kids with cancer.
“We introduce kids who are going through this extraordinary experience to other kids who have a similar experience, and I think that’s really validating,” he said.
The event started in midtown at 8 a.m. Sunday and wound its way down Yonge Street to Fort York Boulevard.
