Ontario planning to implement GO train service every 15 minutes

The Ontario government is hoping more people will leave their cars at home if it makes GO train service more frequent.

Transportation Minister Glen Murray said the province wants to see train service every 15 minutes on all GO lines, all day in both directions.

“This (would be) trains running all day in both directions, every 15 minutes,” Murray explained. “This competes now with standards set in Paris, London and the United Kingdom.”

The service would use electric trains, phased in gradually over the next 10 years, with Metrolinx prioritizing the rollout.

Premier Kathleen Wynne said it would give people flexibility.

“If you are a little bit late, if you’re a mom with your kids and you’re late to the station, you know there’s going to be another train that is going to come along in the next 15 or so minutes,” Wynne described. “That’s the aspiration that we have for this service.”

Murray says GO ridership is estimated to double over the next decade.

The proposal is part of the $29-billion “Moving Ontario Forward” plan, which targets transit and infrastructure in the GTA and Hamilton.
