Suspects sought after Smart Car tipped overnight

Police are searching for suspects after a Smart Car was tipped onto its side overnight in the Wellington Street West and Spadina Avenue area.

Officials say they received a call around 3 a.m. that several people in the area were jumping on cars. Shortly after, they got another call about people attempting to tip over the smart car.

“The smart cars have had their issues, to be honest,” explained Andrew Dziedziola, general manager of Astley Gilbert Limited, owners of the vehicle that was tipped. “We’ve had minor vandalism before but with the smart cars this is the first one that flipped.”

Dziedziola says that in the past they have had windows broken and mirrors damaged on their vehicles. Four years ago the windows were smashed on their entire fleet of cars.

Smart Cars weigh about 1,600 pounds, about half the size of a Camry, which is why they are often targeted when it comes to tipping.

Toronto is not the only city being hit by this act of vandalism.

There was a rash of similar incidents about a month ago in San Francisco and vehicles were overturned during the Vancouver riots in the wake of their Stanley Cup loss three years ago.

“Hopefully this is a one-off incident and we don’t have to be concerned,” said Dziedziola.
