Convicted schoolgirl killer Paul Bernardo to marry: report

Convicted serial killer Paul Bernardo is reportedly ready to marry.

The QMI Agency, which owns the Toronto Sun and the London Free Press, reports his fiancee is a 30-year-old London, Ont., woman who writes to the Scarborough rapist and who has an ankle tattoo that reads “Paul’s girl.”

Sun Media’s national newswire added the unnamed woman even bought wedding bands, but has since re-thought her plans to marry Bernardo after being confronted by her parents.

The woman’s father told the QMI Agency that his daughter is psychologically and emotionally fragile, and lacks street smarts, thus making her the perfect victim for Bernardo.

He now believes reality may have sunk in and hopes his daughter abandons what he calls an “ill-conceived plan.”

According to the QMI Agency, the university-educated woman has been corresponding with the schoolgirl killer since last fall and believes he’s innocent.

London Free Press reporter Randy Richmond, who co-authored the story, has interviewed the unidentified woman several times but the newspaper has chosen not to identify her at this time.

He said she wouldn’t answer directly if she was in love with Bernardo, but added “my sense is that she was, yes.”

‘”I think her parents believe that as well. They talk about how she has this need for unconditional love, and a low self-esteem,” Richmond said.

Richmond said he thinks she’s a victim and was duped by Bernardo.

“She is an intelligent person. She’s had some successes in her life. She’s a very nice person,” he said.

“I don’t think she had a sense of the outcry that Canada would have. That name just sends a chill up us whenever we hear it. And the thought of him marrying anybody, never mind someone 20 years his junior who wasn’t really there when all this was happening.”

Bernardo, 50, has been married once before to Karla Homolka who testified against her ex at his murder trial.

He is serving a life sentence for the Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy murders, and was declared a dangerous offender after pleading guilty to 32 sex-related crimes.
