Most bank robberies are pulled off by a lone suspect, often not even showing a weapon. They may have a getaway car waiting outside and even a driver, but in the end, the heists are meant to be quick and simple, with as few people involved as possible.
But that wasn’t the case at a CIBC at 7765 Yonge St. near John on Thursday. York Regional Police believe at least six young people were involved in the hold-up. It began around 4:45pm when a van parked close to the bank, and four of the suspects scrambled out.
Two of them entered the building, where one pulled a handgun and ordered everyone inside to lay on the ground. The other pair stood guard outside the door, acting as lookouts. The last two are believed to have stayed in the car.
They made demands for money, got what they came for, and fled.
While the suspects made a clean getaway, they left something behind – their partially hidden faces on security cameras.
The suspects are described only as black males, one of whom had curly hair.
The suspects in the bank are said to be:
- 185 lbs.,
- 5’10”,
- About 18,
- Wearing black bandanas and dark hooded sweatshirts and loose pants.
They drove away in a maroon or burgundy mini-van with a tinted rear window.
No one was hurt in the hold-up but cops desperately need a lead on the culprits. If you recognize them or know where they went, call (905) 905-773-1221 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
