Pilot Dies In Plane Crash Near Ottawa

A single-seat Stinger – the world’s smallest jet – crashed shortly after noon at Carp Airport killing 48-year-old Scott Manning.

The pilot was practising for this weekend’s Ottawa Air Show when the tragic accident occurred, according to police.

The airport was blocked off for most of the afternoon and air traffic was stopped. Air show organizers are still trying to determine what caused the fatal crash and the Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation.

Bystanders were stunned by the tragic turn of events as many said Manning was having a perfect practice run.

A pilot at the Carp airport said the Stinger is a notoriously hard craft to fly and that they have a high crash rate.

Manning turned to flying after he suffered a serious knee injury during his football career. He was signed to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but was cut by the team during training camp in 1995.
