Six cars of a CN freight train went off the tracks Friday afternoon as it was heading west toward Oakville, forcing GO Transit to stop all service out of Union Station causing commuter chaos during the end of week afternoon rush. Luckily, the cars were empty and there were no reports of injuries.
Three tracks have reopened and following more track repairs CN said it expected the rail corridor could be fully operational Saturday afternoon.
GO train service was up and running Saturday morning along the Lakeshore line and trains were running on their regular schedules by the late afternoon.
Meanwhile, frustrated passengers at Union Station tried to get refunds for GO Transit routes that were still delayed or others cancelled completely.
“I’m waiting for my friend to come in from Burlington. Not sure if she’s coming in because I’m not sure if the trains are coming in at all,” Suzy Simonetti said.
Friday’s accident left some 65,000 commuters scrambling for a way to get home and many were angry that no other service was offered – there were no extra buses used to deal with the overflow of train passengers.
“I have kids to pick up at daycare. It is a major inconvenience,” one frustrated passenger said Friday.
GO officials said they simply didn’t have the resources to handle the high volume and advised customers to take the TTC or find another way out of the city.
