Scott Downs walked off the mound after Jason Giambi tied things up at fours with an RBI pinch hit. The left-hander didn’t make things easy for his replacement – he left the bases loaded with one out when Justin Speirer took over.
The right-handed hurler managed to strike out Miguel Cairo, but walked Derek Jeter, which brought in the fifth and final run.
When starter Ted Lilly left the game in the sixth the Jays were up 4-3. Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang got the win after allowing four runs on 10 hits and a walk in six innings.
Jeremy Accardo, who the Jays acquired in exchange for their disgruntled infielder Shea Hillenbrand and Vinnie Chulk, arrived during the game but didn’t take the mound. It’s expected he’ll be used to help the team out of sixth and seventh inning troubles.
The Yankees made it onto the scoreboard first in the second with Bernie Williams’ two-run shot. The Jays put a man past the plate in the bottom of the inning on Aaron Hill’s RBI single and Toronto tied things up in the fourth when Eric Hinske popped out his ninth homer of the year.
Lyle Overbay put the birds up by two in the fifth with his two-run double but Johnny Damon cut the lead to one when he scored from third on a balk in the sixth.
