Two out of three ain’t bad. Three out of four against the Yankees, that’s pretty good.
And that’s just what the Toronto Blue Jays accomplished Sunday, putting on a serious display of power en route to a 13-5 win over New York in the series finale. The game wasn’t in the Bronx, and it was the “Bombers” getting bombed.
Vernon Wells hit two home runs while Reed Johnson, Troy Glaus and Eric Hinske also went yard as the Jays jumped all over Sidney Ponson (0-1) and the Yankees pitching staff. Wells and Glaus are now tied for the team lead in home runs with 26, while the eight runs the club put up in the third set a new franchise record for that inning.
Perhaps most impressively, 13 batters came to the plate in the frame and every member of the starting lineup reached base. Though he only had one official at-bat, Gregg Zaun also had an impressive day walking four times.
Rookie starter Shaun Marcum (1-0) didn’t exactly dominate for Toronto, but he did manage to earn his first big league victory by keeping things to three runs on seven hits over five innings. He dodged a bullet when a Jason Giambi long ball hit the top of the wall in right field and bounced back into play.
Marcum’s only major blemish was a three-run homer surrendered to catcher Jorge Posada that momentarily put the visitors on top. He becomes the fourth Blue Jays pitcher to earn his first Major League win this season.
With the victory, Toronto now sits two games behind the Yankees for second place in the American League East, and 4 ½ games back of the Chicago White Sox for the AL Wild Card.
And there was good news for the Jays off the field as well, as sidelined all-star Alex Rios began his rehabilitation and announced he expects to be back when the Jays visit the Oakland Athletics for four games starting Thursday.
Up next Toronto heads out west to start a three-game set with the Seattle Mariners Monday. The series opener will feature Casey Janssen (6-9) for the Jays against Joel Pineiro (6-8) for the M’s.
