Belfour Signs Contract With Panthers

It looks like the Eagle’s wings aren’t quite ready to be clipped.

Former Leaf goaltender Ed Belfour signed a one-year contract with the Florida Panthers on Tuesday, extending his illustrious, although injury-plagued career.

The signing came despite the fact that Belfour recently underwent surgery on his oft-injured back.

“Ed is one of the most successful and talented goaltenders in the National Hockey League,” Panthers GM Mike Keenan said in a release. “It was our goal to add more depth at the goaltending position and we feel we have sufficiently addressed this area.”

The Leafs didn’t pick up an option on the 41-year-old goalie, who became a free agent this summer.

Belfour, who had back surgery in April, will split goaltending duties with Alex Auld.

The future hall of Famer has 457 career wins — trailing only Patrick Roy in NHL history.

He won a Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars in 1999.
