The Docks’ Liquor Licence Reinstated Pending Appeal

They’re not popping the champagne just yet – but a modest toast might be in order.
The bar will be open at The Docks again Friday, as a judge reinstated the nightclub’s liquor licence, pending a court appeal.
Ontario’s Alcohol and Gaming Commission revoked the 10-year-old entertainment complex’s right to serve alcohol earlier in the week, citing excessive noise. The club promptly launched an appeal.
The OAGC decision was cheered by Toronto Islands residents at the time, who’ve long complained about the throbbing bass coming from the club.
Nicholas Macos, a lawyer for The Docks, called Friday’s decision to allow the liquor to flow once again a “small victory.”
“What we really have to do is move forward with some cooperation,” he said. “It can’t be a do-or-die situation.”
Bar owner Jerry Sprackman was also cautiously hopeful about the future.
“I appreciate what the judge has done,” he allowed. “(But) it’s not a victory to me. It’s just a step that keeps us open.”
There were fears The Docks would have had to shut its doors for good if it couldn’t serve drinks while waiting for the appeal – which by court order has to be heard by January. Now owners won’t have to cancel the 130 events already scheduled to take place there and the bar’s 300 employees still have a job.
In order to keep things that way, The Docks will have to abide by a handful of restrictions, among them:
- No outdoor concerts.
- No loud music or noise on the patio after 11pm
- All outstanding fines against the club must be paid.
Island residents were disappointed by the latest ruling, but not surprised.
“We just hope that they, you know, decide to obey the law for a change,” said island resident Deborah Danniels-French.
A “Save The Docks” pep rally has been organized for Sunday between 12pm and 9pm at the club.
