The Toronto Argonauts were looking forward to Thursday night’s game against the Montreal Alouettes as a chance at redemption following their one-sided loss against the B.C. Lions.
Instead of erasing the memory of their ineptitude, Thursday’s match against the undefeated Als served to magnify the Boatmen’s problems. The Als easily bowled over an injury plagued Argo team 31-7, improving their record to a perfect 7-0 while Toronto fell to a dismal 2-5.
Robert Edwards ran the ball in for two touchdowns and Damon Duval kicked five field goals to lead the charge for the Alouettes, who looked superior to the Argos on all levels.
In the end, Edwards collected 138 yards and improved his league-leading TD total to 10.
The Argos narrowly avoided being shut out when cornerback Kahlil Carter picked off a pass and sprinted 84 yards for a touchdown with just minutes left to play.
Back-up Spergon Wynn got the start for Toronto and looked less than sharp replacing Damon Allen, who is nursing a sore finger.
Eric Crouch took over in the fourth and didn’t fare much better.
The Argos were missing their top three running backs in Ricky Williams, John Avery and Jeff Johnson.
Toronto’s next game is set for Saturday in Hamilton.
