Mel Gibson May Face Jail Time For Alleged Drunk Driving

It’s alleged the actor/director had an elevated blood alcohol level when the cops stopped him for speeding last Friday in Malibu and that he had open liquor in his car.

Prosecutors charged Gibson with driving under the influence Wednesday, and if convicted, he faces a possible six months in jail. However, first-time misdemeanour drunk drivers often face only minimal time behind bars and sometimes none at all.

A judge will decide just how harsh the powerful Hollywood star’s punishment will be if he’s convicted.

“After evaluating all the evidence presented by the Sheriff’s Department – and they presented every scrap of evidence they had – we evaluated carefully and felt the charges we filed were the appropriate charges in this case,” district attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said.

Prosecutors made no mention Wednesday of Gibson’s anti-Semitic tirade for which the actor issued a statement of apology earlier this week.

“I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith,” he said.

The Passion of the Christ director was pulled over after police allegedly clocked him doing 140 kilometres an hour in a 70km/h zone.

There’s been no mention if he was charged with speeding.

Gibson then went into a rant against Jews during the arrest and reportedly said: “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,” and asked the arresting officer, “Are you a Jew?”

Gibson’s lawyer, Blair Berk, has refused to comment on the charges and an attorney may appear in the actor’s place at a Sept. 28 arraignment.

“He will be held accountable for his violations under the law,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca said.
