Federer Meets Gasquet In David & Goliath Rogers Cup Final

It’s all set.

Sunday’s Rogers Cup final will feature the number one, versus one a number of people never expected to get this far.

Richard Gasquet of France (pictured) won the battle of the unseeded Saturday, knocking off Britain’s Andy Murray 6-2, 7-5 and earning an unexpected place in the $2.45 million final.

There, world number one Roger Federer waits thanks to a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 victory over the 15 th seed, Fernando Gonzalez of Chile.

“I had a lot of confidence before the match,” Gasquet said. “In the centre court, I (beat) Tomas Berdych yesterday and James Blake, two very good players. Today, I (wanted) to be in the final … I wanted to win and I (had) a great match.

“I served well, I didn’t lose my serve (in the second set), he added. “It was the key to the match.”

Looking ahead to Sunday one can’t help but also look back at the duo’s previous meeting at last year’s Monte Carlo tournament, where the Frenchman stunned his Swiss counterpart. But he also knows to do it again he’s got his work cut out.

“He has a great serve and a great forehand, it’s the best in the world,” Gasquet said of his highly touted opponent.

Also Saturday, the top-seeded American team of brothers Mike and Bob Bryan defeated the fourth-seeded pair that included the lone remaining Canadian representation, Toronto’s Daniel Nestor, along with partner Mark Knowles of the Bahamas.
