Blue Jays starter Shaun Marcum lasted only two and two-thirds innings in Tuesday night’s 4-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners.
Marcum was hammered for nine hits and three runners in a game where both teams failed to capitalize on scoring chances, leaving a combined 22 runners on base.
“I felt like I threw the ball OK. They had some hits that I thought were pretty good pitches,” Marcum said.
Mariners Adrian Beltre and Raul Ibanez both hit solo home runs in the game, propelling right-hander Gil Meche to his first win in nearly two months. The last time he won a game was on July 14th – a 5-3 decision also against the Blue Jays.
“Everybody can quit talking about it, and me, I can quit thinking about it,” Meche said of the winless streak.
The righty managed to keep Toronto hitless through three innings, though he allowed a fourth inning home run to Vernon Wells with Aaron Hill on base. After giving up singles to Lyle Overbay and Bengie Molina in the sixth with only one out, he was taken out of the game.
“We had the right guys coming to the plate, but it didn’t happen,” Toronto manager John Gibbons said of the missed scoring opportunities.
J.J. Putz, who got Wells to fly out to end the game, picked up his 32nd save in 38 chances.
The Jays finish off their series against the Mariners Wednesday afternoon.
