Downtown Fire Claims Woman’s Life

The flames erupted around 7:30am in an apartment building at 33 Isabella St., near Yonge and Bloor. When firefighters arrived at the scene they found the woman’s body on the ground.

“I assume she had to get out somehow,” Toronto Fire Platoon Chief Lorne Buckingham said.

“There was a report from a lot of citizens that there was an explosion inside the residence. It looks like, more than likely, the noise they heard was  … one section of windows that popped open. They probably blew out from the heat.”

The victim is said to be in her 30s, but her name hasn’t been released. It’s still not clear if she jumped or fell.

The fire was contained to one apartment but the thick smoke it created sent several scared residents and their pets out onto the street Friday morning.

“There was smoke pouring off the balcony there and you could see smoke in the hallways on our floor,” resident David Spencer explained.

Toronto Police were notified of the case, but they won’t get involved until the Fire Marshal’s Office has completed its investigation.
