The New York Yankees received some dispiriting news before their outing against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night. The Yanks announced that ace pitcher Randy Johnson has a herniated disc in his back and may not pitch in the playoffs next week. Despite the bad news, the Yankees still looked focused and determined, beating the Jays 7-2.
Gary Sheffield hasn’t made much noise at the plate since returning from wrist surgery, but that all changed when he stepped up to the plate and blasted his first homer since going under the knife – a three-run blast that helped propel New York to victory.
Mike Mussina allowed just one run and two hits in six innings while Jorge Posada launched a two-run homer and Alex Rodriguez had three hits.
With just two games left in the regular season, the Yankees have nailed down homefield advantage throughout the postseason.
Gustavo Chacin gave up five runs and seven hits in 4 2-3 innings as Toronto dropped into a second-place tie with Boston in the AL East.
