Call it the miracle in Oregon. An 11-year-old boy has awoken from a coma he had been in for nearly two years.
Devon Rivers was in a vegetative state for 22 months, left hooked up to a breathing tube because of a mysterious illness. Then somehow last August, he started breathing on his own.
Doctors were amazed by his progress, and they’re astounded as they watch the boy play with toys, catch a ball and start to respond to the world around him.
“For two years the doctors said there was no hope,” reveals his mother Carla Rivers. “Everything that happens in Devon’s life is a gain. There’s no losses.”
Devon has shown a big improvement, crying for the first time. His parents believe it’s from pent up emotions. It’s likely they felt like crying, too.
Before his illness the Gresham, Oregon child loved the Boy Scouts and fishing and his parents hoped he would get an athletic scholarship. Now they just want him to have a shot at a normal life.
