Someone buried a plastic soft drink bottle filled with white powder on the grounds of the school at Southdown and the QEW. When two 10-year-old boys discovered the curious object, they took it into the office.
And that’s when they began experiencing strange symptoms of irritated and watery eyes.
School officials quickly called police and the fire department, who cleared the campus of 350 students and staff members for almost 90 minutes.
They treated the boys for their red eyes and then tried to discover what the substance was.
It turned out to be chlorine, but cops are convinced it wasn’t a deliberate act.
Instead, they believe someone simply threw the bottle out in the garbage and it ended up in the schoolyard.
Cops are reminding residents in all areas of the city that there are special disposal sites for all caustic chemicals.
And they’re pleading with you to take the time to take them there, instead of putting them into your trash – where they can sometimes end up in a place no one expects.
