Roughriders Sink Argos

The Saskatchewan Roughriders’ defence thwarted the Toronto Argonauts time and time again on Friday night, holding off several determined but ultimately futile drives by the Boatmen to preserve a 13-9 lead for the win.

Andy Fantuz’s first-half touchdown gave Saskatchewan a lead that would prove insurmountable.

In the end the Roughriders defence allowed just two field goals, with the other points coming on a safety.

Argos quarterback Damon Allen couldn’t click with his receivers due to almost constant pressure.

The Argos had a good scoring chance when Byron Parker intercepted the ball and headed towards the endzone.

A game-saving tackle by running back Kenton Keith halted his drive, however, and the Roughriders would go on to win the game.

There was one bright moment for Toronto —- linebacker Mike O’Shea, the 14-year CFL veteran from North Bay, Ont., registered his 1,000th career tackle, becoming the first Canadian to reach that plateau and third player overall, joining Willie Pless (1,241) and Alondra Johnson (1,084).

The game’s halftime show featured the Wendy’s Kick For A Million.   Bill Szijarto, a 43-year-old IT support specialist from Port Robinson, Ont., missed the 50-yard field goal attempt, but was successful at 20 and 30 yards out, winning $10,000 in travel vouchers and a $15,000 Best Buy shopping spree.
