It looks like the Ottawa Senators have once again found their scoring touch.
The Sens got off to an uncharacteristic start to the season, scoring an average of just 1.8 goals over their first six games, losing four of them. But an 8-1 win over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday seemed to open the floodgates and the Sens continued to ride the momentum when they faced the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night, dominating their rivals from Ontario 6-2.
Mike Fisher, Andrej Meszaros, Patrick Eaves, Antoine Vermette, Dany Heatley and Chris Neil all scored for the victors, while Matt Stajan and Mats Sundin replied for the obviously outgunned Leafs.
“We’ve got to play with passion, with an edge, and we seem to be doing that more in the last couple of games,” said Fisher. “We’re feeding off each other.
“We’re finally finding the net and getting confidence.”
The Buds will have a chance to gain a measure of revenge when the two teams meet again on Thursday.
“Some of our better players are playing better,” said Sens coach Bryan Murray. “Whether that’s a sign we’ve turned the corner, I don’t know.”
After the game Sundin tried to figure out what went wrong.
“We didn’t have the jump we had in previous games and, when you’re playing a good team like that, that’s what happens — you’re down three goals in a hurry.”
“They’re a team that, if you fall behind, they’re tough to play against.
“We knew we needed to have a good start against them, and we didn’t.”
