CityLine’s Marilyn Denis picked up the Viewers’ Choice Award for best lifestyle host at the Gemini Awards. Fans cast their votes over the Internet over the last several weeks on the Gemini awards website.

“We’ve done over 3,500 episodes and we’re so glad to be on the air still,” Denis said in her acceptance speech.

“If we didn’t have the viewers we wouldn’t know what we’re doing right and what we’re doing wrong, so the Viewers’ Choice means a lot to us at CityLine.”

This was the CityLine host’s third nomination in that category.

Saturday was the first time in the 21-year history of the awards that the Geminis were handed out outside of Toronto. The award ceremony was held at the River Rock Casino in Richmond, B.C.

The Geminis got another fresh burst of energy when Lukas Rossi, the Canadian lead singer of the reality TV created rock band Supernova, performed at the awards.

“Slings and Arrows”, the behind-the-scenes television drama about a Shakespearean theatre festival, won three awards Saturday, including best dramatic series and best performance by an actor and actress, awarded to former Kid in the Hall Mark McKinney and stage veteran Martha Burns.

“One Dead Indian”, a television movie about the fatal shooting of aboriginal protester Dudley George at Ipperwash Provincial Park in 1995, captured two awards for best direction and best writing in a dramatic program or mini-series.

And when it came to comedy, Saskatchewan-based sitcom “Corner Gas” and “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” won honours.
