Overnight Shooting Leaves Man In Serious Condition

Gunfire erupted in a part of the city notorious for gang-related violence Wednesday night, only hours after police made another arrest in the Boxing Day shootout that ended 15-year-old Jane Creba’s life.

A man was shot four times in a parking lot near Lawrence Ave. and Allen Rd., in the Lawrence Heights neighbourhood, at about 8pm. According to reports a vehicle drove up, and someone inside pulled out a weapon and began to fire.

According to a published report the 30-year-old victim is in serious condition and could be left paralyzed after one of the bullets struck him in the spine.

The motive has baffled police. The victim has been identified as 22-year-old father. He was apparently taking out the garbage when the shots rang out. He has no known criminal record.

So far police don’t seem to be getting much help from area residents in tracking down suspects, which unfortunately has become the norm in an area of the city all too used to reports of shootings and gang activity.

Officers hope the victim’s girlfriend might be able to help answer some of their questions. She watched in horror as her mate was cut down.

Investigators are apparently looking for a newer model grey van or SUV in connection with the shooting.

Earlier in the day Wednesday, police had guns drawn on them during a traffic stop in North York. Emergency Task Force officers and a K-9 unit searched the Jane and Sheppard area for suspects but weren’t able to make any arrests.

“No shots were fired and other than the officers being shaken up, there were no injuries,” said Sgt. David Knowles.

Also Wednesday, police charged Jeremiah Valentine with second-degree murder in Creba’s death. He was already in police custody on unrelated charges.

The teen’s killing is one of the highest profile cases in Toronto history.

Anyone with information on the latest shooting incidents is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
