At least 35 people are dead after two suicide bombers attacked outside a police recruitment centre in Baghdad Sunday.
Vicious attacks like this and others are growing more frequent, and putting added pressure on Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to end the sectarian violence plaguing his country.
The two deadly explosions happened simultaneously at 10am injuring dozens of others.
And there was more violence in the Iraqi capital Sunday, including a number of bombings around the city that killed at least 11 people.
Police also recovered five bodies in various parts of eastern Baghdad. The victims had been bound at the wrists and ankles and blindfolded and all had been tortured. Their deaths appeared to have been the work of death squads.
And in Baqouba, northeast of Baghdad, five people were killed in drive-by shootings, including the head of a police unit.
Al-Maliki is under heavy pressure from the United States and is apparently planning a massive cabinet shuffle.
On Sunday he reportedly called on lawmakers to declare their loyalty to a unified Iraq and not to their religious sects or political parties in a closed-door session.
The Americans presented al-Maliki with a timeline to end the violence and achieve a peace between the country’s religious groups and other factions.
