Cheryl Everall and Kimberly Kim were vacationing at the Barcelo Maya resort in the Mayan Riviera last February – the same resort at which the Ianieros were murdered.
“The Ianieros should not die in vain. The family should not sit without justice. We should not sit with the finger of guilt pointed at us for a crime we had nothing to do with,” Everall said Wednesday.
Mexican authorities quickly named Everall and Kim as suspects in the case, claiming a trail of blood led to their room, and now, 10 months after the Woodbridge husband and wife were found with their throats slashed in their room, the women are calling on Stephen Harper to help clear their names.
“We are innocent and our rights as Canadian citizens are being violated,” Everall said.
“We ask Stephen Harper to step in and help clear our names.”
The women are also warning other Canadians to stay away from Mexico until the Ianiero murder investigation is closed.
“Mexico needs a clear message that until Canadian tourists are protected, Canadians should choose a safer travel destination,” Kim added.
In order to get the investigation moving along at a quicker pace, the Thunder Bay pair has suggested that Ottawa beef up a legal assistance treaty between Canada and Mexico that would allow Canadian investigators to probe the case on Mexican soil.
The women say they’re afraid to leave the country, for fear Mexican authorities will have them arrested, but Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay said he’s not aware of any reason why the women should feel afraid to travel outside Canada.
MacKay plans to meet with the two women Thursday, but said he has no intention of changing the travel advisory for Mexico.
