One week after he and a friend fell through the ice on a Scarborough pond, a 15-year-old boy that was on life support sadly gave in and lost his battle.
It was last Sunday when Kishoban Alakeswaran was rushed to the Hospital For Sick Children after falling through thin ice while on the way to a soccer game.
He was with his friend, 11-year-old Brunthan Nadarajah, who died while trying to rescue Kishoban after the older boy went under. The two ignored the warnings of friends and walked onto the dangerous surface.
Brunthan was buried Saturday, while Kishoban remained in hospital in critical condition.
“I remember him as a quiet kid who listened to everybody,” said family friend Subanki Sribalan.
“He was so gentle … he was a really sweet kid.”
At Kishoban’s house, family spent Sunday deep in prayer, huddling together for support in the face of an awful turn.
“It’s so sad because he had to wait for a week, and then finally they find out that he’s gone,” said Sribalan.
“It’s very, very hard,” added another mourning family friend, Thiyagalingam Thiyagarsa.
“I can’t even tell the words, how they’re feeling.”
The teen’s parents have made funeral arrangements for, but police have say they plan to nominate Brunthan for a bravery medal. Clearly though, no honours will fill the hole left by the two boys’ passing.
“He was nice … no problems, no nothing,” said Kishoban’s gief-stricken father, Alekeswaran Subramaniyam.
“He was a very intelligent boy … very, very pain in my heart.”
