Leafs Kick Off Three-Game Road Swing With Win Over Panthers

The Toronto Maple Leafs kicked off a three-game road trip with a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers on Thursday night.

Andrew Raycroft continued to impress between the pipes, stopping 39 shots.   Both goals he let in were fluky ones, bouncing off Leaf players.

“I feel good,” Raycroft said after the game. “Yeah, there were 40-something shots but I was able to see them.

“I’d rather have a lot of pucks and get warm moving instead of standing around getting cold.”

Boyd Devereaux, Chad Kilger and John Pohl all potted goals for the Buds, who won their third game in six tries.

Gregory Campbell and Ville Peltonen replied for the Panthers, who did their best to rally but fell short.

“They really threw it at us,” Toronto coach Paul Maurice said. “We were taking on water but our goaltender was making some saves.

“We got a road win. They needed that game.”

Alex Auld started in net for Florida, giving up three goals on just 14 shots.   After two periods he was replaced by Ed Belfour, who finished the night with five saves.

“We had chances before the third to make it a different game,” Peltonen said. “We came all out in the third but it wasn’t enough today.

“Close, but not enough.”
