Hillary Rodham Clinton announced on her website Saturday that she intends to become the first female president of the United States and kicked off her widely anticipated campaign with the words “I’m in.”
The second-term New York senator took the first step in her run for the Democratic nomination by opening a presidential exploratory committee.
“You know after six years of George Bush, it is time to renew the promise of America,” Clinton said in a videotaped message on her website.
“I’m not just starting a campaign, though, I’m beginning a conversation with you, with America.”
The senator’s husband, former president Bill Clinton, served two terms in office from 1993 to 2001.
Clinton threw her hat in the ring just days after Sen. Barack Obama, who will be the former first lady’s main contender, announced he’d be running to become the first black president of the United States.
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson intends to launch his campaign Sunday with the hopes of becoming America’s first Hispanic president.
There are now five Democratic contenders vying for America’s top job.
In the video message posted on her website, Clinton highlighted bringing a “right end” to the war in Iraq and healthcare as major issues. She also invited Americans to participate in a dialogue with her in a series of three live Web chats.
