The first weekend atop the box office for “Stomp The Yard” was hardly a shock, but few expected the film to keep on dancing quite the way it has.
But with a $13.3 million follow to its strong debut over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, the story of a “stepping” competition between rival college fraternities took in $13.3 million, narrowly beating a $13 million fifth week from Ben Stiller’s “Night at the Museum.”
The urban dance drama stars Columbus Short as a college student who vies for the attention of a girl, played by Meagan Good, by entering a the dance battle.
“Dreamgirls” rounded out the top three with $8.7 million and the trio of return films once again benefited from an almost non-existent crop of new movies hitting theatres in wide release.
In fact the only film to open wide over the weekend was horror movie “The Hitcher,” which came in fourth with an $8.2 million debut.
Will Smith’s “The Pursuit of Happyness” was fifth with just under $7 million.
Meanwhile, though none were able to re-enter the top 10, a handful of smaller cinematic efforts enjoyed a boost in business thanks to some success at the Golden Globes.
Chief among them was “The Last King of Scotland,” which took in an estimated $1.8 million from Friday to Sunday.
The awards season is in full swing, and that was also demonstrated by Oscar hopefuls “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Queen” cracking the top 10 just days before nominations are announced.
