Beyonce Knowles and her Dreamgirls co-stars may be the talk of Tinseltown as the Oscars approach, but they’ll have to share the stage with Canadian chanteuse Celine Dion.
Dion will perform her new song, I Knew I Loved You, at this year’s Academy Awards during a tribute to legendary Italian composer Ennio Morricone.
Morricone is due to receive an honourary Oscar at the Feb. 25 ceremony. He orchestrated that tune for the 1984 Sergio Leone film Once Upon a Time in America.
The songwriters, Alan and Marilyn Bergman, had wanted to write lyrics for the song originally but the film’s producers didn’t think they were necessary.
They eventually got the chance to write words to their music for the Dion version.
Movie buffs are no doubt familiar with the 78-year-old Morricone’s work – he’s received original score Oscar nominations for the films The Mission, Days of Heaven, The Untouchables, Bugsy, and Malena.
Quincy Jones produced the new version of I Knew I Loved You, and it will appear on both an upcoming greatest hits album for Morricone and Dion’s next record.
