Glenn Howard wins Tim Hortons Brier

It’s Canada’s biggest curling biggest prize, and on Sunday it was won by the representative from Canada ‘s biggest province.

Ontario ‘s Glenn Howard won the Tim Hortons Brier with a thrilling 10-6 victory over Olympic gold medalist Brad Gushue and his rink from Newfoundland and Labrador at Hamilton’s Copps Coliseum .

Early on in the final it seemed as if the end result might be reversed, as Gushue’s aggressive style seemed to knock Howard off his game, but the rinks were tied 5-5 after six ends.

“It’s very rewarding, I just wanted to be part of a team, to win, and I did it with three buddies, and I couldn’t be happier,” Howard said.

Choking back tears, an emotional Howard dedicated the victory to his mother and late father.

“I want to dedicate this to my mother and my father, who I lost four years ago, I wish he was here for it.”

The pivotal moment came when Gushue elected to go for the win in the seventh end in an attempt to score three points and take a commanding lead. Instead he wrecked on a guard and in doing so reopened the door for Howard, who had a steal of two and took control from that point.

And he wouldn’t look back this time.

Howard lost last year’s final to Jean-Michel Menard and had said heading into the 2007 tournament that anything less than the championship would be considered a failure.

Sunday’s result was nothing if not a victory.

Howard will represent Canada at the World championship in Edmonton later in March.
