The Ottawa Senators did away with a perennial Eastern Conference power Saturday night, and will advance to the penultimate playoff stage for their efforts.
It was a big second period that made all the difference in this one, and Ottawa will now wait for the winner of the other Eastern Conference semi final, which features the Buffalo Sabres and the New York Rangers. Buffalo leads that series three games to two, but either way, the team from our nation’s capital is going to New York .
Jason Spezza, Antoine Vermette and Daniel Alfredsson all scored on the usually impenetrable Martin Brodeur in the middle frame, and the Sens staved off a late rally which included the second goal from Scott Gomez to preserve the 3-2 win and send New Jersey packing in a shorter-than-expected five games. But the Sens earned every bit of it, and Ottawa outshot the Devils 19-9 in the second.
They are also the final Canadian franchise remaining in the hunt for the Stanley Cup after the Anaheim Ducks knocked the Vancouver Canucks out in five games. This will be Ottawa ‘s second trip to the conference final
- In Saturday’s matinee, the Detroit Red Wings took a 3-2 series advantage over the San Jose Sharks with a 4-1 win.
