Mississauga Community Rallies Around Trailer Park Facing Eviction

A trailer park in the middle the sprawling metropolis that is Toronto could to some seem a bit out of place. But the people of the West End Motors Park , on Dundas near Hurontario, are as “ Toronto” as the place their homes rest and the site, like some of the families, has been there for 60 years.

But that’s all set to change, unless the Mississauga community that surrounds the park can rally enough support to halt the eviction of the homes and everyone that lives in them. There are about 100 people being forced to move because of a planned development, and on Saturday a  fundraising barbeque helped by adding to the $3,000 each resident will get to help cover the costs of literally moving their homes. And while that might seem like a nice sum, most there say it doesn’t even come close to covering their costs.

“Some of them are 70-feet long and the wheels got to go back on and bearings checked,” said fundraiser organizer Glen Moffatt of how much work needs to be done to vacate the grounds. “I don’t think it’s enough.”

“We’re a community here … and we do stick together,” seconded resident Les White. “We don’t harm anybody, so please … leave us alone.”

White says he’d have to split his mobile home in two and pay at least $20,000 to move it safely and properly. As things stand right now, residents have to be out by March of 2008.
