What did you have for breakfast this morning? It turns out it’s not only the most important meal of the day, it’s also proof that you really are what you eat. A new study shows what you consume for your first meal of the day goes a long way to determining whether you’ll be able to keep that weight off those hips and that stomach.
Researchers gave two groups of women different meals for breakfast. One got two eggs and toast every morning. The others were given bagels and low fat yogurt. The surprising result? The egg eaters lost 65 percent more weight and 83 percent more belly bulge – even though both of these breakfasts have the exact same number of calories and both groups ate similar foods for lunch and dinner.
The reason: the first breakfast appears to satisfy you longer than its alternate. “People who ate eggs for breakfast were less likely to overeat at lunch,” explains Jennifer Sygo, a registered dietician at the Cleveland Clinic. “They ate fewer calories over the course of the day and they felt more full.” The study was sponsored by the American Egg Board.
But what about that old worry regarding eggs and cholesterol? It may be on old wives tale. Both groups had normal levels of the artery clogging substance after eight weeks of dieting. “Eggs don’t actually raise cholesterol, unlike what earlier research had suggested,” Sygo adds.
But she also points out that what you use to accompany those morning ovals can turn you oval as well. Slather them in hollandaise sauce or add strips of bacon and you negate the advantage. So what kinds of shell is your best bet to crack? Try hard boiled or poached eggs. Each has only about 70 calories per serving.
