Where Do Kids Get Guns?

If the seriousness of guns in the community was ever in question, one only had to look to Jordan Manners’ funeral for an indication of how the illegal weapons can shatter lives.   Manners, who was buried Thursday, was only 15 when he was shot and killed at C.W. Jefferys, and his death has once again put the issue of guns and their seemingly easy accessibility on the forefront.

Two teenaged friends of Jordan ‘s have been charged with first degree murder, and while some may find the fact that they even had a gun shocking, others say it’s an all too common occurrence.

Anthony, who lives in Regent Park and didn’t want his last name revealed, claims he’s seen children as young as 12 wielding the deadly weapons.

“If you know the right people it’s easy (to get a gun),” he said.   “You can rent one, buy one…Money talks.”

Anthony says drug dealers are arming kids who work for them.

Wendy Cukier, President of the Coalition for Gun Control, tried to explain why young people in troubled communities may feel they need to be armed.

“In addition to feeling like a man if you’re carrying a gun, lots of gang members and kids in the neighbourhoods genuinely feel unsafe,” she said.
