One Day Playground Construction

Nothing put a bigger smile on the faces of kids at a west end housing co-op, the home of a brand new playground, other than the fact that it was built in less than a day just in time for summer.

Just a few hours ago, the front yard of the co-op on Bloor and Perth was just an empty space full of dirt. But thanks to a local not-for-profit called Kaboom, the Home Depot and the help of hundreds of volunteers, it’s been transformed into a fully-equipped playground with a swing set, slides, sand and soon-to-be picnic tables. In fact, by the end of the year the community partners plan to build more than 65 playgrounds and ice rinks across North America.

Thursday’s project was a joint venture that cost thousands of dollars, but with about 600 volunteers on hand all the heaving digging and construction only took six hours to complete. “This morning it was a relatively ugly piece of land and now it’s a place where family and kids can come to relax and play. It’s a good feeling,” said Harry Taylor from Home Depot.

But there were some long faces as the youngsters will have to wait two days until the foundation of cement is dry before they can start enjoying their new place to play.
