The U.S hosts the Grammys, Canada hosts the Junos. They throw the MTV VMAs, we put on the MMVAs. They toast to the Tonys, while we celebrate the…Doras? Yes it’s true, Canada has its own theatre awards show; though it seems few actually know the award ceremony takes place.
The Dora awards celebrate Canadian theatre and dance, and awards are given in five major categories: General Theatre, Independent Theatre, Dance, Opera, and Theatre for Young Audiences.
The awards are named after Dora Mavor Moore who helped establish Canadian professional theatre. The first Dora awards were held in 1981. Each winner receives a bronze statue made from the original by John Romano (shown).
This year, they’re in Toronto, on Monday June 25 at the Winter Garden Theatre beginning at 8pm, followed by an After-Party throughout the Cascading Lobbies of The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre. The host of the awards is Rick Miller.
Regular Tickets: $60 includes Award Show and After-party.
VIP Tickets: $160 includes Pre-show at Rosewater Supper Club
