In Mike Hargrove‘s final game, his Mariners collected their eighth-straight win thanks to a late rally over the Blue Jays.
It was Jose Guillen that yet again burned the Jays for two late runs, leading sealing the 2-1 victory in another low-scoring affair. Guillen drove in the winner with a single in the bottom of the ninth after tying the game with a solo shot in the eighth.
Toronto’s lone run came on Frank Thomas‘ 501st career homer but it wasn’t enough to stop all-star closer J.J. Putz from throwing a scoreless ninth for the win or getting hard-done-by starter Shaun Marcum a well-deserved win after the righty went 6 2/3 shutout innings.
As for Hargrove, the 57-year-old resigned abruptly before the game suggesting he had lost his passion and that the club deserved better.
In other Jays news, outfielder Alex Rios was selected for the American League all-star team, while pitcher Roy Halladay was passed over, but added to the final selection write-in ballot.
Up next the Jays head to Oakland for three against the Athletics.
