Police have seen all kinds of bizarre items – including crowbars and fists – used as weapons in road rage incidents over the years, but even they might admit this one is strange. They’ve arrested a man in a disturbing case that involved a driver who allegedly threw golf balls at the object of his anger.
It happened at Whites Road and Oklahoma Drive in Pickering around 1pm Tuesday when a female driver innocently honked her horn at a car in front of her that failed to signal a turn. The vehicle pulled over and waited for her to pass. She thought it was over, but in reality, the trouble had just begun. The driver immediately pulled out and began tailgating the woman. After a few minutes, the car behind her came alongside her vehicle and the window opened. Cops contend a large stick came out of the window, breaking the woman’s windshield.
The now scared victim attempted to switch directions and lose her attacker. But cops allege he wasn’t to be denied and matched her escape attempts time after time, making U-turns in traffic to keep up with her. The driver supposedly aimed his car straight at the woman, eventually forcing her off the road. And still she managed to keep going.
And that’s when a new form of terror began. Cops say the man behind the wheel began throwing icepacks and golf balls at the now panicked driver as she attempted to pull away from the area. Desperate, she finally turned into a driveway. But police say the man just kept on coming. He allegedly got out of his car and this time approached the victim swinging a golf club and swearing a blue streak at her. Fortunately, the woman had a cell phone and had managed to keep authorities up to speed on her attack via 911.
Cops showed up just in time to arrest 18-year-old Cailean Roche of Whitby. He’s charged with dangerous driving and mischief.
The victim was shaken up but wasn’t seriously hurt.
