Senior Saves 7-Yr.-Old Girl From Drowning Before Vanishing

A 70-year-old man is being hailed as a hero after he saved a seven-year-old girl from drowning in Lake Huron  near Grand Bend.

Ashleen Singh of Mississauga was at a family gathering when she swam into the lake alone and without close supervision.

Police said the water was treacherous at the time and the girl slipped beneath the surface after encountering some difficulty.

Michael Barrett, from Toronto , happened to be in the area and rushed into the waist-deep water to recover the child’s unconscious body. She was brought to shore and regained consciousness after receiving CPR.

“I think it’s the scariest moment of my life,” said mother Ramita Singh. “I could not believe that it was happening to my child.”

Emergency crews said it’s likely the child wouldn’t have made it out in time if it wasn’t for Barrett, who left the area before Ashleen’s mother had a chance to thank him. She said she’d still love the opportunity.

“He saved my child’s life,” Ramita said. “I would not be here smiling today.

“If you’re listening out there, I owe you everything I have in this life.”
