Extreme Frisbee Champs Hit T.O.

Frisbees have long been associated with leisurely days at the beach and dogs have traditionally made the most impressive catches.  But all that has changed over the years thanks to the invention of Ultimate.

In the strategic game, Frisbees are called ‘discs’ and as organizer for the Canadian Ultimate Championships, Renee Tratch explains, the game is a true test of athletic ability.

“It’s 7-on-7.  You’ll see elements of a lot of other sports. Soccer in the cutting, basketball a little bit in the cutting. You have to stop when you catch the disk and pivot and that’s like basketball and it’s kind of like football in that you score a point when you catch the disc in the end zone.”

The tournament, which is underway at Sunnybrook Park in Toronto, features 79 teams and 1500 players.

This year’s divisional winners will represent Canada in the 2008 Championships.

“It’s not just running or catching and throwing. It has aspects of rugby and basketball and football. It’s the most running I’ve ever done ever,” explains one of the competitors, Kathleen Fadelle.

Ultimate has become so popular they’re trying to get it into the Olympics.  The tourney runs all weekend long and the medals will be handed out on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Stadium.
