Website Offering GTA Radar Traps On GPS Systems

It’s bound to cause as many controversies as downloads. A Toronto website that advertises itself as “catering to men” is now offering members the opportunity to download the location of radar traps in the GTA – and send them to the Global Positioning System in their car. The GPS will then pipe up with a warning, reminding you via Google Maps that you’re heading into a high ticket zone, allowing you to put your foot on the brakes.

The creator of the XYYZ website insists that unlike so-called fuzzbusters, this scheme is perfectly legal and doesn’t violate any laws. While Russell Smith admits he’s trying to attract new people to his site, he’s adamant that he doesn’t support speeding. “On the contrary, we’re encouraging people to slow down, and the Toronto Police Service agrees with us,” he notes in a statement. “If you look at our map, you’ll see the city is full of potential spots to earn unwanted points and jack up your insurance rates. And these are just the ones we know about. So our best advice: never speed.”

It’s not clear if police really agree with the concept – although it’s unlikely they or the city, which depends on the income the fines generate, will be big supporters of the tip-offs. The download is free but you’ll have to sign up first.

New Media Specialist Amber MacArthur will have a complete feature on this new service on Thursday’s  CityNews at Six.
