CNE Eats Not For The Calorie Counters

The fried dough of funnel cakes, cotton candy that swirls sky high in a child’s eye and of course hot dogs simmering on the grill are all part of the classically Southern Ontario experience that is the CNE.

But, and this should come as no surprise to anyone who’s been even once, the annual fair’s fare, while delicious, is not for the calorie conscious.

The Exhibition food tent is where a lot of the action happens at the end-of-summer ritual, but whatever lunch you lose on the rides, you’ll take in twice as quickly if you’re not careful.

Maybe it’s the fried rice, chicken wings or the Philly cheese steak (which will set you back a quick 900 calories alone.) Throw an ice cream waffle onto the pile for dessert, and that’s another 700 right there.

Sure, it’s obvious that something like the CNE isn’t supposed to be about salads and light-weight snacks, but as any health expert will tell you it’s all about moderation. For example: a slice of pizza and a Sno-Cone will run you about 200 C’s, which is manageable when you’re chasing little kids around a fairground all day.

But then again, if you’re going to indulge, maybe that one late summer trip to the CNE is just the time to do it.

After all, as attendee Ruchi Kalia put it, “That’s what the Ex is all about.”
