The 2007 Toronto Blue Jays were supposed to be a team that might not out-pitch opponents, but could certainly out-hit them. It just hasn’t worked out that way.
It was more of the same for the frustrated Blue Jays lineup Sunday, as they got a strong outing from a young starter but couldn’t supply the necessary offence in what ended as a 3-1 loss in the series finale against the Los Angeles Angels.
Dustin McGowan kept the Halos in check for most of the afternoon save a home run to Garret Anderson and a few scattered hits, but former Blue Jay Kelvim Escobar was absolutely dominant, earning his career-high 15th win by retiring his first 12 batters.
Vernon Wells snapped the no-hit bid with a broken-bat single in the fifth and Escobar went on to allow five hits over eight innings before turning the ball over to Francisco Rodriguez who pitched a perfect ninth for his 33rd save of the season.
Toronto’s lone run came following a Gary Matthews Jr. error and a sacrifice fly from Troy Glaus.
Toronto now heads up the California coast to Oakland, where they play three with the Athletics before heading home.
