Residents Come Back Home After Drug Lab Bust Evacuation

Residents were allowed to return home on Sunday after a drug lab bust forced them to evacuate. They returned at about 2:00pm.

Two people were charged Saturday after an alleged Ecstasy lab was busted up in Markham.

York Police investigators went to a residence on Castlemore Avenue near Major Mackenzie and McCowan earlier this week on an unrelated matter. They didn’t find the fraud suspects they were seeking, but they did uncover the alleged operation and on Saturday they returned to take it apart, and its alleged proprietors into custody.

Homes in the neighbourhood were evacuated as police, fire crews and Health Canada chemists dismantle the lab. The two male residents, 37 and 38 years old, have been charged with drug possession and trafficking.

“We’re dealing with unknown chemicals, we’re dealing with open containers of chemicals which do not have labels on them,” said York Police Duty Inspector Mark Brown.

The house sits on a quiet, residential street in a subdivision that’s about four years old. Neighbours in adjoining homes were evacuated Friday in advance of the bust.

Police aren’t sure exactly hope much of the drug they’ve found, but it’s believed to be York Region’s biggest lab bust of 2007.
