Vanessa Crone, 16, and Paul Poirier, 15, have been partners for seven years. Yes, since they were 9 and 8. The ice-dancers (from Aurora and Toronto respectively) are reaping the rewards of years of practice. They’re currently the Canadian Junior championships, and on Sunday, they won the Junior Grand Prix in Romania.
They came in ninth last year – this is a huge leap for the pair.
“We gained a lot of confidence last season so we came here knowing we were in the medal hunt,” said Poirier. “We came in this year with new programs and this was the first time we’ve done them at such a high-calibre competition.”
Crone and Poirier finished with 159.87 points. The second place team had 151.93 points.
While they focus on winning, the pair had another goal: “We were a little bit nervous but we really tried to keep the performance up and entertain the audience,” said Poirier.
