On Friday night it was the Blue Jays playing spoiler, and setting the New York Yankees a game back in their quest for a playoff berth, but on Saturday afternoon a game that seemed it might never end, eventually did with the Yankees nudging a little closer to the second season.
Moments after starting a strong relay that cut down the potential go-ahead run at the plate, New York outfielder Melky Cabrera singled home the winning run off Josh Towers in the 10th inning for his fifth RBI to give New York a 12-11 victory over the Toronto Jays in a see-saw affair delayed more than an hour by rain.
The RBI single was Cabrera’s third big hit of the day and ended the wild, messy, back-and-forth game that lasted exactly five hours — after the start was delayed 92 minutes by rain.
The Yankees used a team-record 10 pitchers and again took advantage of a defensive misplay by Blue Jays second baseman Aaron Hill who allowed two-runs to cross and tie the game in the bottom of the eighth.
New York began the day 2 1/2 games behind first-place Boston in the American League East and 4 1/2 ahead of Detroit Tigers in the wild-card race. The divisional rivals play games Sunday and Monday in New York to conclude their season series.
