Rig Rolls On 427 Ramp To 401

It was the same old traffic story on Wednesday as a rig crash caused problems for morning motorists.

The Highway 427 northbound and southbound ramps to Highway 401 west were closed at about 11pm Tuesday after the tractor trailer rolled, taking out a guide rail in the process.

Fortunately the driver wasn’t hurt in the collision. It’s unclear at this point what caused the truck to roll.

The vehicle’s haul of building supplies was removed overnight, and after that the truck was righted and removed from the scene. Road crews came in to replace the safety rail, and by noon the ramps had completely reopened.

At about the same time Tuesday night, Highway 404 northbound near Finch Ave. had to be closed after a car rammed the back of a transport and ended up stuck underneath the rig. It’s unclear if there were any injuries in the crash. The highway was reopened by about 5am.

Meanwhile the OPP have laid charges in a deadly accident on the northbound 427 at Rathburn. A transport truck driver is facing several counts of dangerous driving after the rig slammed into several vehicles including three vans and an SUV. A Toronto man was killed in the multi-vehicle collision. Police are looking for witnesses to that crash – anyone with information should call 416-235-4981.

Truckers commenting on the recent spate of rig crashes suggested poor road conditions and inexperienced drivers are to blame.

“I think it’s lack of training,” said trucker Robert Tardif. “All the young guys that are getting out there, they think they know it all and they have a big rig in their hands.”

Fellow truck driver Charanjit Singh adds a word of caution about driving too fast, saying, “You go there, the truck goes on its side automatically. Too hard to control it. If you’re (going) slow, then you control it. If you’re (going) like 100km/h, you can’t control it.”

The OPP notes that truckers are responsible in less than half of the fatal accidents they are involved in.
