Throwing Stones

It’s not a record set in stone, but it was certainly set with one.

Russell “Rock Bottom” Byars became the new world record holder for stone skipping after sending one bumping along the water 51 times.

The Guinness people quickly certified Byars’ astounding flipping feat, which splattered the old record of 40.

He estimates the stone travelled about 76 metres at a spot just a stone’s throw from where the Allegheny River meets French Creek, north of Pittsburgh .

Byars told a local newspaper he tossed about 40 stones on his record-breaking day over the summer. But his best skip was the first one.
